My name is James Alleyn, and I help students succeed in high school science and math. I've taught chemistry, physics, and general science from introductory through AP level, and I tutor math through Calculus.
I have nearly a decade of teaching experience, including Honors and AP courses, and I have served as science department chair at both St. Francis Episcopal School and Stephen F. Austin High School. At St. Francis, which had only just started its high school program when I joined, I built the Chemistry and Physics courses from the ground up. That work gave me a clear picture of what these courses demand and where students most often get stuck.
Math and science courses can be scary at first, and many students feel like they "just aren't a math or science person." I see part of my job as changing that. In sessions, I break complicated concepts into manageable steps. I take the time to rebuild foundational skills, even if that means revisiting earlier material, and I teach the study habits and organizational skills that carry students through high school and into college. The goal is a student who can do the work confidently and independently.
Outside the classroom, I'm a longtime tennis coach and former collegiate player, and an avid reader who is always seeking and giving book recommendations.
